Law, Politics, Culture and History in Independent Ukraine

Ukrainian Studies Association of Australia Conference at the University of Adelaide

The latest conference of the Ukrainian Studies Association of Australia, which took place at the University of Adelaide from 19 to 21 February, was successful and well organised, with quality papers and a friendly atmosphere. Dr Paul Babie, Associate Dean (Research) at the School of Law, University of Adelaide, chaired the organising committee.

The conference was opened by Mr Stanislav Stashevskyi, Third Secretary at the Embassy of Ukraine in Canberra. Mr Stashevskyi also presented an address, “Constitutional and Political History of Ukraine.” Because of the number of non-Ukrainian-speaking listeners and presenters, the language of the conference was mainly English.

Under the title Law, Politics, Culture and History in Independent Ukraine, the conference featured three keynote speakers: Professor Andrew Stoler, University of Adelaide, “The WTO as an External Agent in Ukraine’s Governance Reforms”; Dr Natalia Chaban, and co-author Mr Vlad Vernygora (who delivered the paper in Dr Chaban’s absence), University of Canterbury, NZ, “’War’, ‘Illness’ & ‘Hope’: Ukraine’s Constitutional Saga through the Eyes of Dzerkalo Tyzhnia”; and Professor David R. Marples, University of Alberta, “OUN, UPA, and Historical Memory in Ukraine: The Rewriting of the Soviet Past”. All four academics hold interesting and responsible positions at their respective institutions. Professor Stoler is Executive Director of the Institute for International Trade at the University of Adelaide; Dr Chaban is Deputy Director and Senior Lecturer at the National Centre for Research on Europe, while Mr Vernygora is Chair, Ukrainian Association of New Zealand (Northern Regions) and a researcher at the same Centre; Professor Marples is an eminent historian and author of many works on Ukrainian history at the Department of History and Classics.

Papers were also presented by Mr Stefan Romaniw, OAM, Executive Director, Community Languages Australia, Chair, Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations, Vice-President, Ukrainian World Congress, who explained the coordination of international activity in Ukraine and the diaspora in connection with world acknowledgement of the Holodomor. Associate Professor Marko Pavlyshyn, FAHA and Fellow of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, Head of the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, and Convenor, Ukrainian Studies, Monash University, delivered a paper on Ivan Dziuba’s defence of the Cultural Nation before and after 1991. Peter Kloczko, a student at The University of Technology, Sydney, who studied at the University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Kyiv during the whole of 2008, reported on his research into the percentages of speakers of Ukrainian, Russian and ‘surzhyk’ (a mixture of the two) in that city. Dr Halyna Koscharsky, Fellow of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, President of the Ukrainian Studies Association of Australia, and Senior Lecturer in Ukrainian and European Studies at Macquarie University, presented a paper co-authored with Associate Professor Geoffrey Hull of the University of Western Sydney, on the teaching of Ukrainian in Australia, based mainly on her 25 years of teaching at Macquarie University.

The discussions after each paper were spirited and informed. It was gratifying to see participants from other states, for example Mrs Kristine Bailey, President of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Australia, from Sydney, and her husband Dr Martin Bailey. The conference was closed by Dr Babie and Dr Koscharsky.

It remains only to thank Dr Babie and his committee most sincerely for a most successful conference, the main sponsors of which were the Ukrainian Studies Foundation in Australia, Mr and Mrs J. Mychailyszyn and Dr Olga Dudynsky of Melbourne and Karpaty Credit Union. At the meeting of the Association after the close of the conference it was decided that the next conference would take place at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.
